The information is not all inclusive and may not represent all available information rather provide a foundation to build from.

If you become totally incapacitated and leave your job as a result, you might be eligible for a disability retirement benefit. The disability retirement was originally created for customers who wouldn’t otherwise be eligible to start receiving a retirement benefit. Even if you have not yet reached the minimum age for retirement, or you are not yet vested in your plan, you can still apply for a disability retirement.
You may be rated for a permanent partial disability (PPD) award before L&I closes your claim if: You have completed treatment and are still able to work, but you have suffered a permanent loss of function. A qualified doctor provides L&I with a PPD rating. Wage replacement and medical benefits will end after receiving your disability award, unless the claim is reopened.
You may receive a monthly pension if you are certified as permanently and totally disabled before L&I closes the claim, and: The medical and vocational evidence finds that your injury prevents you from becoming gainfully employed, or You have lost, or lose the use of, both legs, both arms, an arm and a leg, or your vision.

The Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc., (ODMP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring America's fallen law enforcement officers. More than 26,000 officers have died in the line of duty in the United States since 1776 and ODMP is honored to preserve their memories and give friends, family, other officers, and citizens alike the opportunity to remember the fallen and honor their sacrifices.
In 1997, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsored a meeting of the leaders of the major fire service organizations to ask for their assistance with formulating new line-of-duty death criteria to determine eligibility for inclusion on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
PSOB provides a one-time benefit to eligible public safety officers who were permanently and totally disabled as a result of a catastrophic injury sustained in the line of duty on or after November 29, 1990. Injuries must permanently prevent officers from performing any gainful work in the future.
A unique effort of the U.S. Department of Justice; local, state, tribal, and federal public safety agencies; and national organizations, the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program provides death and education benefits to survivors of fallen law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders, and disability benefits to officers catastrophically injured in the line of duty. The Bureau of Justice Assistance PSOB Office is honored to review the more than 1000 claims submitted each year on behalf of America's fallen and catastrophically disabled public safety heroes and their loved ones.
